Three matches are slated for the day, with Egypt
taking on Uruguay in Ekaterinburg in Group A.
In Group B, Portugal face Spain in Sochi, while
Morocco take on Iran at Saint Petersburg.
The Egypt-Uruguay match will be officiated by
45-year-old Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers who is
participating in his second FIFA World Cup.
Kuiper’s numerous high-profile assignments
include two UEFA Europa League Finals (2013
and 2018), and one UEFA Champions League
Final (2014).
At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, he took
charge of three games and he replicated that at
UEFA Euro 2016, his second European
championship.
He will be assisted by compatriots Sander van
Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra as AR1 and AR2.
Milorad Mazic and Milovan Ristic, both of Serbia,
will be the Fourth Official and Reserve Assistant
Referee.
Italy’s Gianluca Rocchi, who will turn 45 in
August, will handle the second match of Group B
between Portugal and Spain.
Rocchi took charge of his first Serie A match in
2004 and became a FIFA referee in 2008, making
his debut in the UEFA Cup in the same year.
He was included in the referee pool for the
Olympic Football Tournament at London in 2012
and officiated Mexico-Japan in the semi-finals.
The Italian will be assisted by compatriots Elenito
di Liberatore and Mauro Tonolini as AR1 and
AR2.
Ryuji Sato and Toru Sagara of Japan will be the
Fourth Official and Reserve Assistant Referee.
The Morocco-Iran game has been assigned to
Cüneyt Cakir, a 42-year-old Turk who has been a
FIFA referee since 2006.
He took part in the last two European
Championships (2012, 2016), among other
competitions.
In 2014, he was allocated three FIFA World Cup
fixtures in Brazil and was in charge of the semi-
final between the Netherlands and Argentina.
The Turk, who returned to Brazil two years later
for the Olympic Football Tournament 2016, has
countrymen Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun as
AR1 and AR2.
The Russian duo of Sergey Karasev and Anton
Averianov are the Fourth Official and Reserve
Assistant Referee.
Meanwhile, FIFA on Wednesday in Moscow made
a statement on the appointment of Match Officials
and Video Assistant Referees (VARs) at Russia
2018.
It said it would henceforth announce the
appointment of the on-field match officials
(Referee, Assistant Referees, Fourth Official and
Reserve Assistant Referee) approximately 48
hours before a game.
In view of this development, appointment of video
match officials for each of the three matches —
VAR, Assistant VAR (AVAR), Offside VAR and
Support VAR — has been delayed.
It is is planned to be announced later due to
organisational reasons.
However, during the group stage, these
announcements will come at the end of each
match day looking ahead to the following day’s
games (i.e. 24 hours or less before a game).

Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as Spain national coach on the eve of the World Cup, after agreeing to take over at Real Madrid. Madrid had been looking for a replacement since Zinedine Zidane stepped down last month, just days after winning a third consecutive Champions League trophy. After guiding Spain easily through qualification to the World Cup finals, Lopetegui had agreed a new contract up until Euro 2022 in May. But just three days before Spain's Group B opener against Portugal in Sochi, Madrid announced on Tuesday afternoon that they had convinced him to leave that position after the tournament is over to take up a three-year deal with the La Liga giants. RFEF president Luis Rubiales and Lopetegui were set to give a news conference from the national team's camp in Krasnodar early on Wednesday morning. Ex-Spain and Madrid defender Fernando Hierro is also with the team in Russia as sporting director, and could step in as coach if Lopetegui were to leave immediately. On Tuesday night, RFEF vice-president Rafael del Amo told Radio Marca that he was very disappointed by the timing of Madrid taking the national coach, and predicted further negative fallout should Spain not now win the World Cup. "I don't like it, don't like it at all," Del Amo said. "This is not the moment, [Lopetegui] will know that. It is a bit offside, he should have been focused on where he is, there is a lot on the line. I believe they should have looked for another moment, but you must have respect too. I [still] believe we will win the tournament, I hope so. If not, you realise how bad this news could be, for some, and for others. For sure it is not the best thing that could have happened." Reports say that the former Madrid and Barcelona goalkeeper, whose representative Caros Bucero works closely with Portuguese super- agent Jorge Mendes, will triple his salary with the move. Rubiales spoke with Marca on his return to the Krasnodar camp from Moscow, where the national federation president had been expecting to attend Wednesday's vote to pick the host for the 2026 World Cup. "This is not the moment to speak, but we will take the best decision for the national team," said Rubiales, who was only voted RFEF president last month. "We will do things with responsibility."

Last week, a youth corps member serving in
Lagos state was humiliated after a video of some
persons accusing her of stealing an iphone 6s
went viral.
The ladies in the video accused her of stealing the
phone and wanting to extort money from them
before she returned the phone.
Jojo through her lawyers have now released a
statement detailing what transpired with evidence
to back up her claims.
Read the statement and see all the evidence
below
We are Solicitors to Miss Jojo (hereinafter
referred to as ‘Our Client’) on whose instructions
and behalf we issue this statement. We are aware
that some individuals have erroneously labelled
our client “a thief’ out of sheer ignorance or
heightened sense of malice as a result of the
incident that occurred on June 6, 2018. This is of
course, due to the lack of a full grasp
of the true story leading up to the incident. Thus,
for the avoidance of doubt, and to make right her
precious image, we deem it expedient to make a
statement, on the true facts of what transpired.
These facts are hereby set out forthwith seriatim.
On March 23, 2018, our Client entered a contract
for the supply of clothes with one Mr. Fumbi
Kuponiyi (trading under the name and style of
Fame Wears) who persistently refused and/or
willfully neglected to discharge his obligations
under the terms of the contract, upon payment
of the sum of #40,000.00 ( forty thousand naira
only) by our Client. We have attached below, a
screenshot of our Client’s conversation with
Fumbi acknowledging the debt of #40, 000.00 to
our client.
Upon series of futile attempts to recover her
money, which saw the said Fumbi ignoring her
calls and messages, our Client was able to set up
a meeting with him at the Ikeja City Mall on April
27, 2018 where upon verbal confrontation, an
iPhone 6s was forcefully collected from
Fumbi as collateral for the unliquidated debt
albeit not without him making fuss about it in
public.
In a rather shocking period that followed, Fumbi
neither called nor attempted to recover ‘his
iphone 6s’, especially as he had earlier strongly
resisted the use of the said phone as a collateral.
Our client reached out and informed him, to come
and retrieve the phone. (a screenshot of this
conversation is attached below) but Fumbi
remained unperturbed. It then
became clear that something was amiss. Our
client then thoughtfully, reasoned that the only
basis for Fumbi’s nonchalance was perhaps,
because the phone did not belong to him.
However, there was a problem, the screen of the
phone was damaged and the owner of the said
phone could not be ascertained. To cure this
anomaly, our Client demonstrated an
extraordinary act of kindness by repairing the
screen of the phone for the sum of #30,000.00
(the invoice from the repairer with the said
amount is attached below). After repairs it was
discovered that the phone had icloud protection
and the repairer suggested that the owner might
be contacted using contacts from the sim card
found during repair if inserted into another iphone.
Our Client honourably contacted the owner of the
phone(Miss Judith) and informed her of the
circumstances surrounding her phone. She in turn
told our client that she had misplaced the phone
in NYSC camp, at which point our Client realised
that she was also a Youth Corps member and
they had been in the same NYSC camp although
they never met. The owner also
acknowledged that the screen of the phone was
damaged at the time it was stolen and our client
made it clear that the phone was a collateral for
the debt incurred by Fumbi who had then become
inaccessible, but emphatically stated that she
could come for her phone as she
had no intention of punishing her for Fumbi’s
actions. The owner thanked her for her kind
gestures and both parties eventually agreed that
Miss Judith would liquidate the sum of
#30,000.00 used in fixing her phone, and on the
suggestion of our Client, that she will liquidate
an additional debt of #20,000 (adding up to
#50,000.00) owing to the fact, that once the
phone is gone, her #40,000.00 debt owed her by
Fumbi will be lost. Miss Judith saw reason with
this, and agreed. (We have begun the process of
retrieving the telephone communication between
our client and the said owner which would be
made available to the
public to buttress this point).
We make bold to say, that our client had at no
time demanded for any ransom from the owner
(this would be hilarious as she never kidnapped
any phone nor had interest in keeping a phone
that was not hers), all she wanted was
predominantly the #30,000.00 expended on the
phone to ascertain its true owner. (We have
attached a video dated June 5, 2018 sent to the
owner calling on her to come and retrieve her
phone, and just bring her money, her loss was
becoming too much).
The parties agreed to meet at Circle Mall, Lekki.
However, the owner of the Phone came with a
Police officer to arrest our client as the “thief” of
her stolen phone.
Our client explained her story to the police, who
neglected, refused and failed to investigate or
inquire about the said
Fumbi. Our client was painfully and unfortunately
detained at the Ilasan Police station, Lekki
Jakande without legal representation. The police
refused to hear or investigate her story. She was
eventually granted bail at 8p.m in the tune of
#80,000.00 (eighty thousand naira only)
and her iphone was seized till full payment was
made the next day.
We must categorically state, that our client was
charged to court, but all allegations against our
client were struck out by the learned trial Judge
who demanded our client to be more careful with
her business partners (in reference to Fumbi
Kuponiyi) in future by signing an undertaking to
that effect. (A copy of this ruling is accessible to
any member of the public who so desire to have
it).
We wish to state that up till this day, the
30,000.00 used in fixing her phone, and on the
suggestion of our Client, that she will liquidate an
additional debt of #20,000 (adding up to
#50,000.00) owing to the fact, that once the
phone is gone, her #40,000.00 debt owed her by
Fumbi will be lost. Miss Judith saw reason with
this, and agreed. (We have begun the process of
retrieving the telephone communication between
our client and the said owner which would be

this day, the #30,000.00 expended on the phone
by our client has not been paid to her,
irrespective of the fact that the owner
acknowledged that the screen of the phone was
faulty even when she had it.
We wish to reemphasize the fact that our client is
not a thief and has never demonstrated any
criminogenic propensity. We use this medium to
call on all purveyors of defamatory publications
and comments or insulting rumours to desist
from such. In all honesty, somelogical questions
should pass through our minds as seekers of the
truth:
I. True, the phone had icloud protection, is it not
possible for it to be sold in the ‘black market’ at
whatever value possible? Why go through the
hassle of getting to the owner if our client had a
guilty mens rea?
II. Why did the police not investigate the said
Fumbi or at least bring him in for questioning?
(We have attached a conversation between Fumbi
and our Client on June 8 immediately after
becoming aware of the ‘theft’ story propagated
on social media).
We leave these questions for the public to answer
without the clouding effect of sentiments.
We humbly entreat ALL bodies or individuals
promoting defamatory content against our client
to kindly desist and remove ALL defamatory
content forthwith. Failure to do so, we will be
forced to seek redress via litigation and its
antecedent consequences.
